Frequently asked questions

Search for what you need, or pick a topic. If the answer is not here, email hello@astrafootwear.com and a person will reply.

What size should I order?

Our adult styles are built roomy and every pair includes the Flex Fit Pack, so you can tailor the fit once it arrives. If you are not sure which size to order, use the fit finder on our Size Guide page. It asks a few questions about your foot and tells you the size and setup to order. The full size chart is on the same page.

How do I measure my feet at home?

Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall, late in the day when your feet are at their largest. Mark the tip of your longest toe, then measure from the wall to that mark in centimetres. Measure both feet, as most people have one slightly longer, and use the larger number.

Do you make half sizes?

No. ASTRA is made in full sizes only. If you normally take a half size, order the full size up and leave all three Flex Fit layers in to take up the extra room. You get the length you need without the shoe feeling loose.

What is the Flex Fit Pack?

It is our approach to width. Rather than making the same shoe in several separate widths, we build one shoe that suits a wide foot and a standard foot equally well.

Every pair arrives with three footbed layers already in the shoe. That is the standard setup. To free up room, lift the footbed out and take a layer away.

  • Standard foot: leave all three layers in.
  • Roomier fit: remove one layer.
  • Wide or high volume foot: remove two layers.
  • Feet that differ from each other: set each shoe up separately. There is no need for the pair to match.

Layers go back in any time, so your fit can change as your feet do.

Do you make wide fittings?

Most adult styles are built generously and use the Flex Fit Pack rather than separate widths. Take a layer or two out and there is room for a wide foot, a bunion, swelling or an orthotic.

Two styles work differently. Ascend is built wide throughout, so there is no width to choose. Rise Kids and Rise Duo Kids are made in two fittings, Standard and Wide, which you pick at the point of order.

They feel tight across the top of my foot. What do I do?

Loosen the laces, re-tie them at the new tension and leave them there. Because you do not undo the laces to put the shoe on, you can set them looser than you would on a normal sneaker without the shoe feeling sloppy. If you need more than that, take out a Flex Fit layer.

My feet swell during the day. Will they still fit?

This is one of the things the design handles well. Set the laces loose enough for your feet at their largest and use the zip to get in and out. If you need more room on a bad day, loosen the laces further or take out a Flex Fit layer. There is no need to size up.

My two feet are different sizes. What should I do?

Buy for the larger foot, then take up the difference on the smaller side by leaving all three layers in that shoe and tightening its laces a little more. The two shoes do not have to be set up identically.

Can I wear a men's size if I usually wear women's?

Yes. Our unisex styles work across genders, and the size chart shows both.

Will they stretch?

The upper softens and moulds slightly to your foot over the first week or so. The length will not change, so buy for length and adjust the width with the Flex Fit layers and the laces.

Do I need to break them in?

No. ASTRA shoes are made to be comfortable from the first wear. If a pair still feels wrong after a few days of trying them on indoors, they are the wrong size or shape for your foot. Start an exchange in our returns portal and we will swap them.

Can I get help choosing a size before I order?

Yes. Email hello@astrafootwear.com and we will talk it through with you.

Which countries do you ship to?

Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Prices are shown in your own currency, and for the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom duties and import taxes are included at checkout.

When will my order ship?

Order before 9am Sydney time, Monday to Friday, and we ship the same day. During peak periods please allow 2 to 3 business days for dispatch. Pre-orders are not subject to same-day dispatch.

What does shipping cost and how long does it take?
  • Australia, Standard, orders over $175: free. 2 to 5 business days for NSW, VIC and QLD, 5 to 10 business days for WA, NT, SA and TAS.
  • Australia, Standard, orders under $175: $12.95, same delivery times.
  • Australia, Express: $16.95, 1 to 3 business days.
  • New Zealand: $15.00 AUD, 8 to 12 business days.
  • United States: $18.71 AUD, 5 to 10 business days.
  • Canada: $17.00 AUD, 5 to 10 business days.
  • United Kingdom: $10.00 AUD, 5 to 10 business days.

There is no express service outside Australia. Full detail is on our Shipping page.

Will I be charged duties or import taxes?

Not on delivery. For the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, import duties and taxes are calculated on your order and collected at checkout, so the total you see is the total you pay and there is nothing owing when the parcel arrives.

If a courier ever asks you for money on delivery, do not pay it. Send the paperwork to hello@astrafootwear.com and we will sort it out.

Do you ship to PO Boxes and parcel lockers?

Yes, both. Enter the address exactly as Australia Post has it registered.

Do you offer click and collect?

No. All orders are delivered.

How do I track my order?

As soon as your parcel leaves us you will get an email with a tracking link. For Australian deliveries the Australia Post app tends to show more detail than the website.

My parcel says delivered but I do not have it.

Please wait 24 hours, as parcels often turn up. Check with everyone at the address, look in your usual safe place and ask your neighbours. If it still has not appeared, contact hello@astrafootwear.com and we will help.

Something is missing from my order.

Contact hello@astrafootwear.com within 30 days of the shipment date and we will sort it out.

What if my parcel is refused or cannot be delivered?

It comes back to us automatically. We can send it out again at your cost, or refund it with the original shipping deducted. Reshipment takes 10 to 14 business days.

How long do I have to return an item?

Your return must reach us within 30 days of the original delivery date. Anything arriving after that does not qualify for a refund. The full policy is on our Returns and Exchanges page.

Can I return a sale item?

Sale items can be exchanged or returned for store credit, but not refunded, unless they are faulty. Anything discounted 10% or more counts as a sale item.

Please note that our launch pricing is currently 20% off across the range, so every style counts as a sale item right now. Exchanges and store credit are available as normal, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law for faulty goods are unaffected.

What condition do the shoes need to be in?

Unworn, in their original packaging, with tags attached and in pristine, resalable condition. Please try them on indoors on carpet rather than outside. Put the shoe box inside a protective satchel, and do not stick labels or tape onto the box itself.

Returns that arrive worn, marked, scuffed, without tags or without their original undamaged box do not meet our returns condition and will not be refunded. If that happens we will contact you and return the shoes to you at your cost.

How do I start a return?

Submit a request through our returns portal. You will get an authorisation email with the return address and your RMA reference number. Pack the shoes as described above, post them back, and keep your proof of postage. Our portal handles Australian orders.

Do you provide a return label or pay for return postage?

No. We do not provide a returns label or cover the cost of sending a return back to us. We do cover the postage on sending your exchange out to you.

Who is responsible for the parcel on the way back?

You are, until it reaches our warehouse. Please get proof of postage, as parcels lost or damaged in transit on the way back to us are your responsibility.

How long does a return take to process?

Up to 5 business days from the date your return tracking shows as delivered. Your bank then takes a few more days to show the money back on your statement.

How will I be refunded?

To your original payment method, unless you have asked for store credit instead.

Do I get my original shipping cost back?

No. Refunds cover the price of the product only.

If I exchange a sale item, do I pay the difference?

If you are changing size only, no price difference applies, even after the sale has ended. If you are changing to a different style or colour, you pay any difference.

I am returning from outside Australia. What do I do?

Email hello@astrafootwear.com before you send anything back. International returns are arranged by hand, so we will confirm the return address and the best way to send it.

The same 30 day window and the same condition rules apply, and return postage is your cost. Please do not post anything back until we have confirmed the address with you.

Do ASTRA shoes have arch support?

Yes. Every pair has a contoured footbed with built-in arch support and a cushioned, cupped heel, rather than a flat sheet of foam.

I have a wide foot. Will ASTRA shoes fit me?

Yes. A wide foot is what the shoe is built around. Take one or two Flex Fit layers out and the shoe opens up considerably.

The zip helps here too. Because you open the shoe rather than pushing your foot through a fixed opening, a wide forefoot, a bunion or a prominent joint is not forced past anything on the way in. For more room across the top, loosen the laces and leave them at the looser setting.

I have a narrow foot. Will they be too loose?

No. Leave all three Flex Fit layers in, which is how the shoe arrives and the closest fit it offers, then fine-tune with the laces and leave them tied at that tension. If one foot is narrower than the other, set the two shoes up differently.

Can I put my own orthotics in?

Yes. The footbed lifts straight out, leaving a flat bed with room for a custom or over-the-counter orthotic. For a full-length orthotic, take the ASTRA footbed out rather than stacking the two, and take the Flex Fit layers out as well, since an orthotic already uses that volume. If it still feels tight, loosen the laces and re-set them.

Which ASTRA style should I choose if I wear an AFO?

All ASTRA styles will take an AFO. If you want to be certain of an easy fit, choose a Halo Zipper style. Because that zip continues around the toe, the entire upper folds flat and the braced foot is lowered straight onto the footbed rather than angled in from the front, which is where AFO wearers usually struggle with a standard shoe.

Take the Flex Fit layers out, as an AFO already uses that volume.

My AFO has worn through the inside of my shoe. Is that covered?

No. Some AFOs damage footwear from the inside. That is considered general wear and tear and is not covered by the warranty.

Are they good for plantar fasciitis, flat feet, bunions or swelling?

Many of our customers wear ASTRA for exactly these reasons, and the arch support, heel cushioning and adjustable fit all help. We are a footwear brand rather than a medical provider, so we cannot give clinical advice. If you have an ongoing foot condition, please check with your podiatrist first.

Can I wear them for standing all day at work?

Yes. Nurses, teachers, hospitality and retail workers are a large part of who we make these for. The outsole is rubber, which grips well underfoot and helps resist slipping on smooth surfaces.

Can I run or work out in them?

Yes, in the right style. Horizon and Orbit are built for running and training. The rest of the range is made for walking and all-day wear. They will handle a long day on your feet or a light workout comfortably, but they are not intended for running or the gym.

What makes ASTRA different from other sneakers?

Four things. First, the zip entry. You set your fit once with the laces, and from then on the shoe goes on and off using the zip alone. Second, support. Every pair is built on a contoured footbed with built-in arch support, a cushioned heel and a stable midsole, so the shoe holds your foot properly all day rather than flattening out by lunchtime. Third, weight. ASTRA shoes are light, which makes a real difference across a full day on your feet. Fourth, fit. Every pair includes the Flex Fit Pack, so one shoe suits a wide foot and a standard foot equally well.

How does the zip work?

The first time you wear them, tie the laces to the tension that feels right. Then leave them tied. You never need to undo them again. After that, unzip to open the shoe, put your foot in and zip it closed.

Do I have to re-tie the laces every time?

No. The laces set your width and tension, they are not how you get the shoe on and off. Tie them once, then use the zip. If your fit changes, through swelling, a thicker sock or a new orthotic, loosen or tighten the laces and leave them at the new setting.

Which side is the zip on?

That depends on the style. ASTRA is made in two zip configurations.

  • Halo Zipper: starts on the outside of the shoe, runs down the side and continues all the way around the toe.
  • Duo zip: a zip on both sides, so it opens from either the inside or the outside edge.

The zip type is listed on every product page. If reach, grip or dexterity is easier on one particular side, choose a Duo zip.

How far does the shoe open?

Further than a standard lace-up in both configurations, though how far depends on the zip.

  • Halo Zipper is the more open of the two. Because the zip continues around the toe, the entire upper releases and folds flat away from the footbed, so the foot is placed straight down onto the insole rather than pushed in from the front. Best for AFOs, braces and splints.
  • Duo zip opens from both sides. Undo one zip for a wide side entry, or undo both and the whole collar and tongue lift clear. Good for significant swelling, limited ankle or knee movement, anyone whose reach or hand strength is better on one side, and anyone dressing another person. It also works with AFOs, braces and splints.

In both cases the laces stay tied. The zip does the opening and closing.

Who are ASTRA shoes designed for?

Anyone who wants a supportive shoe that is easier to put on than a lace-up. That includes people with a wide foot, people who wear an AFO, people with bunions, people with limited hand strength or dexterity who find laces difficult, people with arthritis, swelling, limited mobility, back or hip pain, people who are pregnant, carers dressing someone else, and anyone simply tired of fighting with laces.

Are ASTRA shoes suitable for older adults?

Yes. A zip is far easier to manage than a lace, and the wide, flat outsole gives a stable base. The outsole is rubber, which grips well and helps resist slipping on smooth surfaces.

Is the zip strong enough for daily use?

Yes. Every ASTRA shoe is fitted with a YKK zip, the recognised standard for zip strength and smooth running. It is also the component we test hardest, because it is the part you use every day. If a zip fails through a manufacturing fault within 6 months of purchase it is covered by our warranty.

Can I still wear them if I do not need the zip?

Absolutely. Many people buy ASTRA for the comfort and support alone, and simply enjoy never having to bend down and tie a lace again.

What are ASTRA shoes made from?

A rubber outsole for durability and grip, an EVA midsole and an EVA inner sole for cushioning and all-day comfort, and an upper in leather, canvas or mesh depending on the style.

Is the leather real leather?

Yes. Where a style is described as leather, it is genuine leather, not a synthetic substitute.

Are ASTRA shoes vegan?

Most of them are. Our leather styles are not vegan. Every other ASTRA style is vegan and contains no animal-derived materials. The materials are listed on each product page, so you can check before you order.

Are ASTRA shoes latex free?

Yes. ASTRA shoes are latex free.

Are they waterproof?

No. ASTRA shoes are not waterproof and are not designed for wet weather. They will handle a light shower, but they are an everyday shoe rather than a rain shoe.

Do you sell individual shoes?

No. ASTRA is sold in pairs only. We are not able to supply a single shoe, or a pair made up of two different sizes.

Do you make kids' sizes?

Yes. Horizon Kids, Orbit Kids, Rise Kids and Rise Duo Kids are all made in kids' sizes, and width is handled in one of two ways.

  • Rise Kids and Rise Duo Kids come in two fittings, Standard and Wide, which you choose at the point of order. Pick Wide for a broader foot, a higher instep, or an orthotic.
  • All other kids' styles come with the Flex Fit Pack, the same system used across the adult range.
How often do you restock?

Core colours are restocked regularly. Limited edition and seasonal colours are made once and are gone when they sell out. To hear first, open an ASTRA account and opt in to marketing emails.

How do I know my order went through?

You will get a confirmation email within a few minutes. If it has not arrived, please check your junk or promotions folder before contacting us, as that is where it usually is.

Can I change or cancel my order after placing it?

No. Once your order is complete it is already moving to the next stage and we are unable to change or cancel it. If it is not right when it arrives, use our returns and exchanges process instead.

Can I change my delivery address?

Only if your order has not reached fulfilment. Email hello@astrafootwear.com straight away and we will update it if we can. Once the parcel has shipped we cannot intercept it, but because we send with Australia Post you can redirect it yourself through your MyPost account or by contacting Australia Post directly.

How do pre-orders work?

A pre-order secures your pair in advance, with an estimated shipping date shown at the time of purchase. Pre-orders are not subject to same-day dispatch.

I ordered a pre-order item and an in-stock item together. What happens?

By default the whole order ships once, as soon as everything is ready. If you would rather have the in-stock part sent first, email hello@astrafootwear.com and we will split the order for you.

Do I need an account to order?

No, you can check out as a guest. An account makes it easier to track orders, save addresses and manage your preferences. You can register at astrafootwear.com/account/register.

How do I reset my password?

Go to the login page and select "Forgot your password?", enter your email address, then check your inbox for the reset email and follow the link.

I have difficulty using the website. Can you help?

Yes. Email hello@astrafootwear.com and we will give you the information you need in whatever way works for you.

What does the warranty cover?

Goods are faulty if they arrive damaged, or if a manufacturing fault happens within 6 months of purchase. For ASTRA that includes a zip that fails, splits or comes away from the upper under normal use.

How do I make a warranty claim?

Email hello@astrafootwear.com with your order number, a description of the problem, and clear photos of the fault and of the sole of the shoe.

My zip has stopped running smoothly. Is it faulty?

Not always. A zip that has picked up grit will often run freely again once the teeth are brushed clean and dry. If it still catches, jams or separates after that, send us photos and we will assess it as a warranty claim.

What is not covered?
  • Normal wear and tear, including worn tread, scuffs, creasing, fading and worn insoles.
  • Damage caused by an AFO wearing the shoe from the inside.
  • Any damage caused by machine washing or tumble drying, which voids the warranty.
  • Accidental damage and misuse, including forcing a zip that is caught.
What payment methods do you accept?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express, PayPal and Shop Pay. NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed can also order, as set out in the NDIS questions.

How do I get access to discounts?

Open an ASTRA account and opt in to our marketing emails. Only codes issued by ASTRA will work. Codes from third-party coupon sites will not apply at checkout.

Can I use more than one discount code?

No. Only one promotion, discount link, reward offer or referral code can be applied per order.

My discount code is not working.

Check that it has not expired, that your order meets any minimum spend, that the items are not already discounted, and that you are not trying to combine it with another offer. If it still will not apply, email hello@astrafootwear.com before you place the order.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. E-gift cards are valid for 3 years from the issue date. They are final sale and non-refundable, and cannot be used to buy another gift card.

Can I buy ASTRA through my NDIS plan?

Yes, in two ways. If you are self-managed, add your 9-digit NDIS number to the notes field at checkout. If you are plan-managed, get in touch and we will issue an invoice to your plan manager.

Do you accept agency-managed NDIS orders?

No, not at this stage. Self-managed and plan-managed participants are both welcome to order using the methods above.

When will my NDIS order be shipped?

Once payment has been received, your order is dispatched within 24 hours.

Are you an NDIS Approved Provider?

Not at this stage, though the two options above mean you can still order through your NDIS plan.

Do ASTRA shoes qualify for NDIS funding?

Yes, if your plan includes a Low Cost Assistive Technology Support budget.

Are ASTRA shoes stocked anywhere else?

Email hello@astrafootwear.com and we will let you know about stockists in your area.

Is it safe to buy ASTRA from other websites?

The only official place to buy online is astrafootwear.com, along with our approved stockists. If you see ASTRA advertised at a heavy discount on a site you do not recognise, it is not us, and we are not able to warranty or refund it.

How do I contact you?

Email hello@astrafootwear.com for everything: orders, fit advice, warranty claims and accessibility support.
