5 Reasons Families Are Gifting Their Grandparents Zip-Up Shoes (No Laces, No Bending, No Fight)
Updated October 2026
Every year the same question: what do you buy someone who says they do not need anything?
ASTRA is an Australian brand making everyday sneakers that open with a YKK zip, so the laces stay tied and the shoe does the work. Here is why adult children keep buying them for their parents.
The problem starts before the walk
When someone stops going out as much, everyone assumes it is about energy, or interest,
or the weather.
Often it is about the getting ready. Shoes are the gate everything else passes through. If that
part is a struggle, the walk, the shops and Saturday with the grandkids all quietly become less
appealing.
Nobody announces this. They just go out less.
What you notice, and what it usually means
- Backs of their shoes trodden flat Bending down to put them on has got hard
- The same pair worn every day for years The other pairs are too much effort to get on
- Slower getting out the door The getting ready is the tiring part, not the outing
- Shoes loose in the morning, tight by evening Feet are swelling through the day
- Socks around the house, shoes only when forced Laces have become a two hands and a chair job
A slip-on is not the answer, and here is why
The usual fix is a slip-on. It solves the wrong half of the problem.
A slip-on
Has to be loose enough to push a foot into, because it never opens.
So it can never hold the foot properly. People end up walking in a shoe that slides, which is
its own problem.
A zip
Opens wide, so the foot goes in without bending or tugging.
Then closes firmly around the foot. Open like a slipper, hold like a proper shoe.
You tie the laces once. That is the last time.
This is the part people take a second to believe.
ASTRA still has laces, because laces are how you set the width and tension for your foot. You
tie them once, to the tension that feels right. Then you leave them. Forever.
From then on the shoe opens and closes with the zip. No bending. No fiddling. No asking someone
to do them up.
If the fit needs to change later, a thicker sock, a swollen afternoon, a new orthotic, you
loosen the laces once and leave them at the new setting.
Feet change size through the day. The shoe should too.
A foot at 7am and a foot at 7pm are not the same foot. Most shoes ignore this, which is
why so many people own shoes that fit on exactly one day of the year.
Every ASTRA box has three footbed layers inside, the Flex Fit Pack.
- Leave all three in for a standard fit
- Take one out for more room
- Take two out for a wide or high volume foot
- Take the footbed out completely to fit a custom orthotic or an AFO
Each shoe can be set up differently, because most people have two slightly different feet and
no shoe brand has ever acknowledged it.
If it looks like equipment, it stays in the box
This is where most footwear aimed at older people fails, and it fails badly.
It is designed to solve a medical problem and it looks it. Beige. Chunky. Velcro. Nobody wants
to be handed a reminder that they are getting older, wrapped as a present.
ASTRA are sneakers. Black, white, navy, leather or canvas. The zip is the only thing that gives
it away, and most people assume it is a design detail.
Underneath: a contoured footbed with arch support, a cushioned heel, a lightweight build and a
wide rubber outsole that grips on smooth floors.
What if I get the size wrong?
You do not need to ask them, and you do not need to guess. Answer a few questions here and it will tell you the size to order. Sizes are unisex and run EU 36 to 45.
If you would rather they chose, a gift card is valid for three years. And exchanges and store credit are available within 30 days of delivery, so if the fit is not right it can be swapped.
